| Located between St. Simons Island and Savannah, McIntosh County is a rapidly growing area popular for it's undeveloped, open spaces, beautiful scenery, natural settings and new communities built around golf, boating, fishing and other amenities. Historic Darien sits on the Altamaha River at the county border with Glynn and is known for it's Shrimping industry. Fort King George in Darien was the first English settlement in the state of Georgia established in 1721 to deter French expansion in the area. Re-enforced the next decade by Scottish Highland warriors who established the town of Darien, the entire area reveals this Scottish influence with names like McIntosh, Mackay and Dunbar. Other historical areas in the county include a late 16th century Franciscan mission on a bluff in Darien as well a a Spanish fort ruins on Sapelo Island. Like much of the Georgia Coastline, the coast of McIntosh county is dotted with islands of many sizes. Most of the larger islands are state owned and undeveloped and are home to the many wildlife refuges that dominate McIntosh County such as Harris Wildlife Refuge, Blackbeard Island Wildlife Refuge and Wilderness Area, Wolf Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Sapelo Island National Estuarine Sanctuary. Several smaller Islands are privately owned or developed for communities accessible only by boat or plane.
Within the Brunswick-Glynn MLS, the county is not separated into quadrants like Brunswick and St. Simons Island. So the expanse and variety of McIntosh is viewed as a whole - which is rather broad and can be a bit unfocused. Below are some of the major areas and neighborhoods in McIntosh:
